About Me!

Emily Bober is an artist based in Midland Michigan. She often spends her time drawing digital character designs and environments, as well as working on short animations. And though digital design is her focus, it’s always a nice change of pace getting away from screens and creating something physical through traditional media. Emily’s favorite mediums include felt, clay, wire, cardboard, or any other material she can somehow transform into a sculpture.

In her free time, Emily loves playing Nintendo games and absolutely considers herself a completionist. If a game isn’t explored to its fullest extent, it hasn’t been enjoyed to its fullest extent either. Gameplay aside, she also has an intense love for video game music, stating that if she weren’t striving to become a game artist, she would love to be a video game composer!

Artist Statement

A comment I was told about my art that has always stuck with me is that my “characters look like they could be made into marketable plushies.” Similarly, I’ve been told my drawings/sculptures look “edible.” Not only did these comments live rent free in my head because they’re funny, but I do agree that I generally desire that cutesy, soft, friend-shaped style in quite a bit of my art. That’s not to say I can’t draw in other genres; I just think that when art can make a person extremely happy through its design and shape language, that is a huge accomplishment. It is the joyful reaction to this type of art that has given me such a love for the style and keeps me going back to it.

But it is not solely this style that encourages me to create, in fact, my passion mainly stems from my childhood interests. As a kid, I played a ton of Nintendo video games. Some of my favorite memories of all time come from the late nights staying up past my bedtime to watch my sister get to the next checkpoint in a game. This obviously played a huge role in why I want to be a video game artist today; however, I also think it was this constant intake of unique characters, vast imaginary worlds, and inspiring storylines that influenced my urge to start creating and expanding on my own art!
